UN Calls for Shielding National Oil Corporation From Armed Groups’ Pressure

Protecting oil from pressure and political interference

LIBYA – The Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator in Libya, Ulrika Richardson, has met National Oil Corporation (NOC) chairman Masoud Suleiman to discuss the challenges facing the oil and fuel sectors and ways to protect the country’s main source of revenue from fuel smuggling and the misuse of public resources.

The UN mission’s media office quoted Richardson as stressing the need to enable the NOC to work effectively, free from unwarranted interference and pressure from any armed groups, while protecting vital oil facilities and infrastructure from disruption or political exploitation.

Coordinating international support and protecting revenue

The meeting addressed ways of coordinating international support for Libyan institutions, helping them tackle shared priorities and reach practical solutions.

Participants stressed that protecting the country’s oil wealth matters not only for economic stability but also for building public trust and ensuring that all Libyans benefit from their country’s resources.
