UN talks on human rights priorities
Libya – The human rights, transitional justice and rule of law team of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) met the National Council for Civil Liberties and Human Rights at its headquarters in Benghazi.
The meeting, held with the council’s acting deputy chair and her working team, provided an opportunity to discuss the council’s current priorities, needs and areas of cooperation within the mission’s engagement with national human rights institutions and in line with the Paris Principles.
Discussing concerns and protection mechanisms
According to the mission’s media office, the meeting addressed key human rights issues, pressing concerns and opportunities to strengthen cooperation on their protection, the rule of law and national human rights mechanisms in Libya.
Meetings with authorities in Benghazi
UNSMIL added that the council facilitated meetings with authorities in Benghazi, notably the military prosecutor, the attorney general, the head of the judicial police and the national committee monitoring prisons and prisoners, where recent developments and concerns related to human rights were discussed, including the situation of detainees and the recent resumption of carrying out death sentences.
