Washington ties the political track to economic agreements in Libya
LIBYA – An analytical report published by Middle East Online said US-Libyan talks had gone beyond the political track to include economic issues, among them a unified budget.

The report, whose main analytical points were followed by Al-Marsad, said that approach was reflected in recent talks between Abdulhamid Dbeibah and Jeremy Berndt, the US administration’s adviser on Libyan political affairs.
Interlinked Issues Before Elections
According to the report, the discussions come as Libya seeks agreements able to overcome the institutional split between its authorities in the east and west. It said presidential and legislative elections remain the main gateway to addressing the Libyan crisis, but that holding them requires progress on a series of interlinked issues.
Those issues, it said, range from electoral laws and the formation of an elections commission to unifying institutions, public spending and stable management of the country’s oil wealth.
Support for a Sustainable Track
The report argued that support for the electoral process and for economic agreements forms, for Washington, part of efforts to keep a viable political track going.
