Libya Formally Asks Malta to Extradite Elmushraty, Known as Lilu King

Formal Libyan request to extradite Lilu King from Malta

LIBYA – Libyan authorities have submitted a formal request to Malta for the extradition of Mohamed Ali Ahmed Elmushraty, known as “Lilu King”, and a final decision is still under consideration by the Maltese authorities, the English-language Maltese newspaper MaltaToday has reported.

The report, whose main points were followed and summarised by Al-Marsad, said the written request was submitted last September and that Malta is reviewing its legal implications before reaching a decision, according to Home Affairs and Security Minister Glenn Bedingfield.

Human rights and pending court cases

Bedingfield said consideration of the request takes human rights legislation into account, while the report noted that Elmushraty faces long-standing charges in Malta, including organised crime, violent sexual assault, money laundering and drug trafficking.

It added that Elmushraty also faces charges of murder and illicit trafficking in Libya, and noted that he has lost his refugee status, which the report said removes any legal obstacle to deportation linked to that status.

However, the report said any formal extradition would depend on the outcome of cases before the Maltese courts and any legal appeals that may follow.
