Food Control Discusses Support for Farmers, Regulating Imports and Protecting Local Produce With Dbeibah Government’s Economy Ministry

Government meeting on supporting production and food security

LIBYA – The Food and Drug Control Centre, represented by Abdulmajid Abu Lamida, director of its Food Control Department, on behalf of the centre’s director general, has taken part in an expanded meeting held by the Minister of Economy and Trade in the Dbeibah government at the ministry’s headquarters to discuss support for farmers and livestock breeders and improving food security.

The meeting was attended by the Undersecretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture and by representatives of the farmers’ syndicate, the breeders’ union and the General Company for Veterinary Medicines.

Production costs and Agricultural Bank funding

Participants discussed tackling the rising cost of production inputs and the difficulties farmers and breeders face in securing feed, fertilisers, veterinary medicines and serums, as well as developing the Agricultural Bank’s role in financing.

Regulating imports and oversight of production inputs

The meeting reviewed the creation of a framework to regulate imports according to the seasons and volume of local production, in order to curb the dumping of goods on the market and protect producers from price volatility and the effects of the parallel market.

It also discussed tightening oversight of veterinary medicines and production inputs and coordinating their distribution so that they reach those entitled to them, helping build an integrated and economically viable production system.
