Boulos Praises Libya’s Hosting of Flintlock 2026 as AFRICOM Confirms Launch from Sirte
Libya – US presidential adviser Massad Boulos praised Libya’s hosting of Flintlock 2026, describing the exercise as an important step toward military integration in Libya and stronger regional security cooperation.
In a post on his official X account, Boulos said he was pleased that Libyan partners from both the east and west were hosting the multinational drills. He added that the Libyan officers leading these efforts are working to build a strong foundation for unified military and security institutions, which he said is essential for achieving lasting peace.
Boulos also stressed that the United States will continue to support these efforts and cooperate with Libyan forces capable of making greater contributions to regional stability.
Joint statement confirms launch
In a joint Libyan-Italian-American statement published by AFRICOM, the parties confirmed the launch of Flintlock 2026 in Libya, with the exercise set to officially begin following an opening ceremony in Sirte later this week.
The statement said Flintlock, AFRICOM’s premier annual multinational special operations exercise, brings together forces from more than 30 countries across Côte d’Ivoire and Libya. The training will include integrated air, land and maritime scenarios aimed at enhancing combat readiness and improving the effectiveness of all participating nations.
Historic moment for Libya
According to the statement, Libya’s hosting of part of the exercise marks a significant historic milestone. By facilitating the training of forces from more than 10 countries, the joint Libyan forces are demonstrating their commitment to regional security and highlighting the strength of military unity.
The statement added that Italy played an important leadership role in planning and supporting the implementation of the exercise in Libya by providing key leadership and essential resources.
Support for a unified Libyan military
The joint statement said Flintlock supports the continued development of a unified Libyan military, describing it as a necessary foundation for long-term security and prosperity in North Africa.
It added that the exercise reflects a broad international commitment to supporting secure and sovereign African states led by their own people.
The participating parties also said they were proud to help host the opening segment of the exercise in Libya for the first time, in the city of Sirte, which they said embodies how local and international cooperation can deter terrorist threats targeting Libya, its partners and the United States.
