Abdul Aziz: More than 700,000 education staff for 1.2 million students, and the situation requires structural reform
Libya – Former General National Congress member Mahmoud Abdul Aziz called for a serious review of conditions in the education sector, citing more than 700,000 employees in the sector against 1.2 million students.
Speaking on the programme Between the Lines on Al-Tanasuh channel, which belongs to Sadiq Al-Ghariani — the General National Congress mufti removed by the House of Representatives — and which Al-Marsad followed, Abdul Aziz said the structure of the education sector and the number of people working in it needed to be reviewed.
Abdul Aziz: The numbers are catastrophic
Abdul Aziz said his family’s ties to the education sector drove him to demand a serious look at its condition, describing the number of employees relative to students as “catastrophic”.
He said the figures amounted to roughly one teacher for every two students, insisting, in his words, that such a ratio does not exist in any other country.
Call for Dbeibah to review the figures
Abdul Aziz called on Government of National Unity Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah to review the numbers of staff and students in education, arguing that fixing education required a full structural reform.
He ended by affirming his solidarity with teachers in their protests and demands.
