Akreem: Weak Drainage Capacity and Theft of Drain Covers Worsen Tripoli’s Rain Crisis

Theft of drain covers and litter add to drainage bottlenecks

LIBYA – Mohamed Akreem, spokesman for the water company, has said the rain that fell on Tripoli within a few hours was heavy and exceeded the capacity of the city’s limited drainage network, noting that drain covers were still being stolen even though they had been replaced with covers that cannot be recycled.

Clearing bottlenecks and citizens’ responsibility

In exclusive comments to the Tanasuh channel, which is affiliated with Sadiq Al-Gharyani, the General National Congress mufti whom the House of Representatives removed from office, Akreem said water bottlenecks had been cleared in several cities, and urged citizens to avoid dumping waste that blocks drain openings.

Drain-cover theft continues

He stressed that drain covers were still being stolen repeatedly, despite being replaced with types that cannot be recycled, according to his account.
