Political accusations from Al-Mirdas against opponents of a settlement
LIBYA – Former Libyan ambassador to Syria Mohamed Shaban Al-Mirdas accused a political current in Libya of making obstruction of settlements a standing approach, using the label “party of rejectionists” to refer to those he considers opponents of a solution.
Accusations of seeking gains during Skhirat and Geneva
In comments to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Al-Mirdas said the current of Sadiq Al-Gharyani, West Libya’s mufti dismissed by the House of Representatives, had chosen to oppose engagement in political processes in order to push aligned parties to turn to him and secure gains, in his assessment, arguing that this approach had succeeded in the Skhirat agreement and the Geneva talks.
Expectation that opponents will retreat under possible sanctions
He said he believed the UN initiative had become a fait accompli and binding, expecting those he described as spoilers of a solution — foremost among them Al-Gharyani and Mohamed Tekala — to retreat in the face of the Security Council’s threat to impose sanctions on spoilers of a settlement.
