Call to separate heritage from worship
Libya – House of Representatives member Jaballah Al-Shaibani has called for a review of what is known as the “Sayyida Aisha shrine” in Tawergha and what he described as associated practices of seeking blessings at shrines and rites attributed to the remembrance of God.
A season for dates, rain and popular heritage
In a post on his personal Facebook page, Al-Shaibani said that, in his view, it would be better to change the name and turn the gathering into a popular season for dates and the arrival of the rains, for trade, meetings, acquaintanceship, horse racing and the revival of the popular heritage that Tawergha is rich in, away from linking it to shrines and any religious complications that may follow.
He added that, in his opinion, this would tie the celebration to dates and rain, preserve popular heritage, and separate heritage from worship.
