Fidan stresses support for a Libyan-led political process
Libya – A news report by Turkey’s Anadolu news agency said Ankara had renewed its positions in support of Libya’s unity and stability during an international meeting in New York.
International meeting on peace, unity and prosperity
The report, which Al-Marsad followed, quoted Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on the Libyan crisis at the meeting on “International Support for Peace, Unity and Prosperity in Libya”, held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to the report, Fidan stressed the importance of a Libyan-led political process and of strengthening economic and security institutions. Turkish diplomatic sources were quoted as confirming the participation of officials from Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Britain, France, Italy and Qatar, as well as Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Libya’s stability and security, and dialogue with all parties
The report said participants discussed the UN-facilitated political process and issues of economic prosperity and security. Fidan stressed the importance of Libya’s stability and security for the wider region and said Turkey would continue to contribute actively to efforts in that regard.
It also cited Fidan’s remarks on his visit to Libya on 11 and 12 August and his meetings in Tripoli and Benghazi, where he renewed his country’s support for efforts to form a unified government under Ankara’s “one Libya” policy.
According to the report, Fidan also stressed the importance of international partners engaging in dialogue with all parties and actors in Libya without discrimination, calling for support for a political process led and owned by Libyans themselves, while Turkey continues to provide capacity-building support aimed at unifying and strengthening economic and security institutions.
Turkish readiness for a role in development and security
The report concluded by noting that Fidan expressed Turkey’s readiness in the coming period to play a leading role in areas where Libya needs support, including development and security.
