Rome links support for the US move to the UN track
Libya – A news report by Italy’s Nova news agency quoted Italian Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Maria Tripodi on her positions at an international meeting on Libya in New York.
Support for US moves and the UN roadmap
The report, which Al-Marsad followed for its main points, said Tripodi affirmed at the meeting on “International Support for Peace, Unity and Prosperity in Libya”, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Rome’s backing for Washington’s moves and for the UN roadmap.
According to the report, Italy tied its support for US diplomatic efforts on Libya to the need for them to complement the United Nations roadmap and consolidate the 4+4 agreement, quoting Tripodi as expressing those positions on behalf of Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
Washington’s initiative as an additional tool for the UN track
The report described Italy’s stance as significant for expressing Rome’s view at a time of growing United Nations efforts and diplomatic initiatives by the United States and Turkey to accelerate the unification of institutions in Libya.
It said that, in its reading, Rome was not choosing between the US track and the UN track, but presenting Washington’s initiative as an additional tool for the UN plan of unifying institutions, stabilising the political and security framework, and ultimately holding legislative and presidential elections.
Commitment to the 4+4 mechanism
The report added that Italy’s call to implement the 4+4 pointed to a wish to preserve a mechanism in which Italy has invested directly since the start of negotiations in Rome. It said Tripodi’s participation underscored the central importance of Libya’s stability and coordination with key international partners, while keeping the UN-facilitated political process as the reference standard.
