Advanced glaucoma surgeries under a programme to localise treatment
LIBYA – Benghazi Teaching Hospital for Ophthalmology and Eye Surgery has carried out more than 15 free operations using modern techniques to treat glaucoma, as part of the “Localisation of Treatment at Home” programme, under the supervision of consultant ophthalmic surgeon Dr Yasmine Al-Shukri, who said this type of surgery was being performed for the first time in the eastern region.
Lowering eye pressure and a recovery period of up to three months
Al-Shukri explained, in exclusive comments to the Libyan News Agency (LANA), that the surgeries aim to lower eye pressure and reduce the risk of optic-nerve damage, while limiting complications and harm associated with traditional surgery. She noted that recovery takes from one to three months.
Weekly clinic, children’s units and training for doctors
She added that the programme had helped reopen a specialised glaucoma clinic operating throughout the week, as well as opening units to treat the disease in newborns and children and training national medical staff under experienced doctors.
Early screening and groups at higher risk
Al-Shukri urged the public to seek early examinations if they experience weakened vision, chronic pain around the eye or chronic headaches, warning of a higher risk among those with a family history of the disease, people with diabetes or high blood pressure, and those with short-sightedness.
