Gharyan Teachers Refuse to Resume Classes, Threaten Civil Disobedience Until Demands Met

Gharyan teachers hold to strike and financial rights

LIBYA – The media official for the Gharyan teachers’ movement, Shukri Farid, said teachers in the city had staged a protest sit-in the day before yesterday, declaring they would not resume classes until their demands on salaries and professional rights were met.

Unified pay scale and salary differentials under Law No. 4 of 2018

Farid explained, in exclusive comments to the Ab’ad platform, that the demands include ensuring fairness in pay, adopting a unified salary scale instead of the scale recently put forward by the government in Tripoli, disbursing salary differentials under Law No. 4 of 2018, and activating the previously issued Teacher Protection Law, which has not yet entered into force.

Threat to extend civil disobedience to private institutions

He stressed that classes would not resume before the demands were met, warning that civil disobedience would be declared across all educational institutions, including private ones, if there was no response.

Thursday sit-in with education inspection participation

He added that Thursday would see a large protest sit-in with the full participation of the education inspection office in Al-Jabal.
