Tetteh: Mission’s Renewal a Chance to Push a Libyan-Led Settlement and Elections That Restore Libyans’ Right to Choose Their Leaders

Tetteh pledges an inclusive process and unified institutions

LIBYA – The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, has said the UN mission is closely following reactions to the renewal of its mandate, pledging to keep supporting an inclusive, Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process leading to the unification of state institutions and the holding of elections.

International welcome and concerns over political deadlock

In a post on her official X account, Tetteh said many Libyans had welcomed the continuation of international support, and expressed gratitude for the backing of the Security Council and international partners, while saying she understood other parties’ concerns over the continuing political deadlock and the level of progress in the UN-facilitated process.

Dialogue with all sides and new consultation formats

She stressed that the mission would continue consulting key stakeholders across Libya’s political spectrum, adapting its efforts and developing dialogue and meeting formats to ensure inclusive participation, strengthen the prospects for unified institutions and lasting stability, and hold elections that restore to citizens the right to choose their leaders.

Call for difficult decisions and tangible progress

Acknowledging that Libyans had waited a long time, Tetteh affirmed the mission’s commitment to working with political parties to achieve these goals, and called on political actors and the institutions concerned to respond to the aspirations of those they represent, take responsibility and make the difficult decisions needed to move the country forward.

She concluded by stressing that the moment requires political leadership, courage, consensus and a sense of urgency that translates into practical steps and real progress reflected in Libyans’ lives and well-being.
