Water Company: Tripoli Rains Exceed Drainage Capacity as Encroachments Halt Pumping at Martyrs’ Square

Rains exceed Tripoli’s drainage network capacity

LIBYA – Mohamed Akreem, spokesman for the General Company for Water and Wastewater, said rainfall in Tripoli had exceeded the capacity of the city’s rainwater drainage networks.

Illegal connections, encroachments and power theft

In exclusive comments to Fawasel, Akreem said illegal connections, encroachments on the networks and power theft had caused further problems that affected the efficiency of the sanitation system. He said some pumping and lifting stations had been hit by encroachments that hindered their operation, and that the company had contacted the competent authorities to take the necessary action over the encroachments.

Martyrs’ Square pumping station out of service

Akreem attributed the pooling of rainwater in the Martyrs’ Square area of Tripoli to the pumping station being out of action because of encroachments on it, even though the drainage network in the area is working.
