Al-Arofi: House of Representatives Leans Toward Ratifying ‘4+4’ Deal; 103 MPs Declare Support
LIBYA – House of Representatives member Abdelmoneim Al-Arofi said the prevailing mood in the chamber leans toward ratifying the ‘4+4 agreement, regardless of the one-month deadline set for approval, noting that this coincided with 103 MPs declaring their support, in addition to other members who have not yet stated their positions.
Ratification Would Settle Files Including the Electoral Commission
Al-Arofi, speaking exclusively to Al-Raed news network, said ratification would help settle several files, chiefly the High National Elections Commission, along with other amendments set out in the agreement.
Formal Vote Requires a Session Called by the Speakership
He noted that the House had already made its position known through its members, but adopting the agreement requires a formal vote, which in turn requires a session convened at the invitation of the Speaker.
Deadline Not Genuine UN Pressure, He Says
Al-Arofi said he did not see the deadline for approving the agreement as genuine UN pressure.
The real pressure, in his view, lies in the positions of the Presidential Council and the High Council of State toward the agreement — particularly after what he described as their disavowal of it.
Criticism of UN Mission’s Role
He concluded that the UN mission, in his view, has grown accustomed to applying pressure without finding solutions or being able to craft them, stressing that parties on the ground are an inseparable part of ending the political stalemate.
