A possible US path toward a unified executive
LIBYA – Political science professor Yousef Al-Farsi argued that the US move is closer to a realistic track that could support United Nations efforts, and need not necessarily bypass them.
East–west understanding paving the way for elections
Speaking to Al-Ain Al-Ikhbariya, Al-Farsi said the core of the idea is an attempt to unify the executive authority between a party that holds power and influence in the east and a party that enjoys international recognition and controls the levers of power in the west.
The aim at a later stage, according to Al-Farsi, “is to provide the appropriate conditions for holding elections”.
He added: “Any possible US understanding may not be an alternative to the UN track, but a political pressure tool to reach a new formula for the executive authority, with elections remaining the ultimate goal.”
Pressure on the State Council over the 4+4 committee
The political analyst also linked these moves to the pressure facing some political bodies — above all the State Council — over forming the “4+4” committee, reflecting an attempt to push Libyan institutions toward new arrangements.
