Balance of power shapes chances of a US settlement
LIBYA – Libyan political analyst Hazem Al-Rayes argued that the US approach appears practical and pragmatic, seeking a balance between the influential forces in eastern and western Libya rather than entering a new political track that ignores existing power balances.
A political, economic and security understanding beyond posts
In remarks exclusively to Al-Ain Al-Ikhbariya, Al-Rayes said this vision is not limited to the political dimension but is also tied to economic, security and military tracks, making any potential understanding larger than a mere agreement on distributing posts.
Comprehensive settlement or redistribution of influence?
Al-Rayes asked: “Is Washington seeking a comprehensive settlement that addresses the roots of the Libyan crisis, or a redistribution of influence among the forces already present?”
He explained that the difference between the two options is large: the first could lead to a more stable transitional phase ending in elections, while the second could reproduce the divide in a new form.
