Calls to activate the Illegal Immigration Agency and begin deportations
Libya – Lawyer Thuraya Al-Twebi said activists from the Tripoli movement organised a sit-in outside the Illegal Immigration Agency and the Prime Minister’s Office, calling for the agency to be activated after it was brought under the Interior Ministry.
In a post on her personal Facebook page, Al-Twebi said the number of people who had entered the country irregularly had exceeded three million, arguing that this figure had surpassed one-third of the population.
Deadline until 1 October
She stressed the need to begin deportations, activate the agency and equip it with mechanisms and buses to remove irregular entrants and foreigners present unlawfully after their residencies expire, while retaining only workers who have completed their legal procedures in accordance with laws regulating the entry and exit of foreigners, combating irregular migration and opposing settlement.
Al-Twebi said the public, in her words, had expressed its anger and set 1 October as a final deadline for the presence of irregular foreigners, referring to what she described as a demonstration in Brussels accusing Libya of killing, rape and shame.
Call to deport detainees and coordinate with embassies
She called for all foreigners held in detention centres to be deported to their countries, arguing that this would protect them from alleged violations, and for everyone present unlawfully to be removed through what she described as a popular deportation plan, via coordination between local committees and the competent authorities.
She also called on the Foreign Ministry to assume its responsibilities and contact embassies to begin accepting and receiving their nationals, demanding a statement to the world if those countries refuse to take them back, in order to end what she described as the “alleged shame”.
