Warning of international shocks — FAO calls on Libya to strengthen its grain reserves
Libya – Abdul Hakim Al-Waaer, the regional representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for the Near East and North Africa, stressed Libya’s urgent need to expand its strategic grain storage capacity to protect domestic food supplies from international shocks linked to prices and supplies.
Insufficient storage capacity
Al-Waaer said, according to a report published by Egypt’s English-language Daily News Egypt that Al-Marsad followed and translated, that Libya currently lacks sufficient capacity to store strategic grain reserves, limiting its ability to absorb disruptions in global supply chains.
He added that increased investment in grain silos and strategic commodity storage facilities would give Libya a better opportunity to cope with fluctuations in global prices.
Strengthening food security
Al-Waaer explained that building stronger storage infrastructure would form an important part of Libya’s efforts to strengthen food security and reduce its exposure to external shocks, alongside confronting supply shortages and changes in global production rates.
