Iraqi News Agency: 1.2 Million Narcotic Pills Seized in Libya on Intelligence From Baghdad

Iraq says intelligence helped seize 1.2 million pills in Libya

LIBYA – A report by the official Iraqi News Agency said intelligence provided by Iraqi agencies contributed to an anti-narcotics operation inside Libya that ended with the seizure of 1.2 million narcotic pills linked to a criminal network operating out of Chad.

Joint operations in seven countries and about nine tonnes seized

The report, whose main points on Libya were followed and summarised by Al-Marsad, quoted the director general of the Directorate of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs at Iraq’s Interior Ministry, Lt Gen Ahmed Al-Zarkani, as saying Iraq had carried out joint intelligence operations in seven Arab and regional countries that resulted in the seizure of about nine tonnes of narcotics.

Al-Zarkani said Baghdad had coordinated with the competent authorities in Libya, Kuwait, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, drawing on precise intelligence that made it possible to track international smuggling networks.

Iraqi monitoring of a network operating from Chad

He said the latest operations outside Iraq were carried out in Libya on the basis of entirely Iraqi intelligence monitoring and resulted in the seizure of 1.2 million narcotic pills belonging to a criminal network operating out of Chad, saying Iraq had become one of the leading Arab countries in qualitative anti-narcotics operations beyond its borders.
