Czech expertise to support unifying institutions and securing borders
LIBYA – Members of the Joint Technical Coordination Team for Border Security carried out a series of experience-sharing visits in the capital of the Czech Republic last week, in cooperation with the Czech Interior Ministry and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development.
Coordination between eastern and western institutions
The UN mission said through its media office that the visit was organised with its coordination and included military and security leaders and officers from eastern and western Libya, underlining a collective commitment to advancing efforts to unify military and security institutions.
The visit included working sessions and field visits that focused mainly on coordination among the relevant authorities and information-sharing mechanisms, with particular attention to risk analysis and operational border-security strategies.
Activating centres in Tripoli and Benghazi
The visit follows agreements to activate the joint border-security centre in both Tripoli and Benghazi, with the aim of improving the performance of border-guard units and related bodies by learning from others’ experience.
Staff Brig Gen Mohamed Lakri, Chief of Staff of the Border Guard at the Defence Ministry in the western region, said: “We gained a clearer understanding of ways to strengthen coordination and information sharing based on the latest methods and technologies, which enables us to raise performance and efficiency.”
Three-day visit and longer-term partnerships
The three-day visit, from 7 to 9 September, helped strengthen the Libyan delegation’s expertise and knowledge and laid foundations for longer-term partnerships and cooperation to reinforce security mechanisms.
Maj Gen Salem Al-Jailani, Chief of Staff of the Border Guard Forces at the Land Forces General Staff in the eastern region, said: “It was a successful visit to learn from partner countries’ experience, transfer know-how and see modern equipment that can improve effectiveness, in line with our aspirations to see similar operations rooms in Libya soon.”
He added that the group expressed its thanks to the Czech Republic and to the mission for facilitating the visit.
Joint team founded in 2024
The Libyan Joint Technical Coordination Team for Border Security was established in 2024 to develop a unified Libya-wide approach to border-security challenges.
The visit formed part of a broader support programme facilitated by the UN mission to increase cooperation and build trust between security institutions in the east and west towards unification, helping create an environment conducive to an effective electoral process.
