Report: Italy Expands Military Cooperation With Libya Amid International Rivalry and Security Concerns

Italian–Libyan defence ties in a regional context

Libya – A report by the Nigerian site Business Insider Africa said Italy, a founding member of NATO, is strengthening its defence relations with Libya amid expanding military cooperation across North Africa and competition among international powers for influence.

Training and capacity-building

The report, followed by Al-Marsad, said Italian and Libyan military leaders recently met in Tripoli to discuss expanding operational capabilities, professional training, capacity-building projects and the exchange of expertise, with the aim of widening the military partnership with leaderships of the General Staff under the Presidential Council.

Russia and security concerns

The report linked the meetings to growing security concerns and incidents it attributed to foreign drone attacks, and to the expanding Russian military presence in the region, with Moscow calling for a political settlement. It argued that the overlap of these developments with internal dialogues could increase the fragility of the security situation.
